November Monthly Seminar

On Wednesday, Nov. 28, we are going to have a guest speaker for the monthly Sage Seminar. Jessie Fischer, Principal at Theodore Jamerson Elementary School on the UTTC campus, is our guest speaker. Ms. Fischer is originally from Standing Rock and was the principal at Sitting Bull School in Little Eagle, SD, before coming to TJES.

Ms. Fischer will visit with us about what principals look for when they hire teachers, things principals wish every teacher knew or could do when they start their new job, tips for working with families and other teachers/staff, and so on.

The seminar will begin at 12 noon on Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Building 61 (upstairs from Security). Lunch will be provided.

We will wrap up by about 12:50 for those of you who have class at 1 pm.

See you there!

Teacher Workshop Examining Incarceration of People of Japanese Ancestry Set for Oct. 20

BISMARCK, N.D. – A free workshop, “Teaching Untaught Histories,” will be presented on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck. The curriculum to be presented, The Untold Story of the Department of Justice Incarceration of People of Japanese Ancestry, is for middle and secondary social studies and humanities educators. A $150 stipend, refreshments, and light lunch will be provided.

In the 1930s and 1940s, numerous people living in the United States were identified as “enemy aliens” and placed on a secret government list called the Custodial Detention List. This workshop will consider how being placed on this list impacted the lives and communities of people of Japanese ancestry. It take a close look the political policies and climate that led to the incarceration of both citizens and aliens of Japanese ancestry within hours of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the National Japanese American Historical Society, San Francisco; the National Park Service, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, and United Tribes Technical College.

This project was funded, in part, by a grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant. The mission of the Japanese American Historical Society in San Francisco, California, is to educate the public about the contributions of Japanese Americans to American Society.

Fall 2018 Grant Support

The grant support for you has been submitted for the fall 2018 semester. We're giving it to you a little earlier this fall since we're confident now that you're going to continue to meet the requirements for the project (and could use the funds). You were each awarded $3,000 so watch your accounts in my.uttc.edu.

A heads up that the first Project Sage Monthly Seminar will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at noon. More information will follow closer to that date.

I hope your semester is off to a great start!

Summer Grant Support

The grant support for the summer 2018 semester has been submitted for processing. You will have to watch your student accounts in my.uttc to find out when the money will be added to your account. We submit the request but we do not know when the funds are actually available to you. Please allow at least 5 business days for it to be processed. I know it's hard not to call people and ask them about it but it's a Finance Office process so we have to let them do their job.

As we mentioned at the last monthly seminar we had, summer financial support is different than it is for the fall/spring semesters. During the fall and spring semesters, grant participants (you) are eligible to receive $3,000 per semester as long as you are passing your courses, making progress on your Praxis tests, etc. The summer semester is different. According to the grant, which is Department of Education money, scholars (you) can receive up to $1500.

This is how summer student support is calculated: If you take a summer course and pass it with a C, or higher, you are eligible to receive $750. If you take more than one course, you have to pass all of your courses with a C, or higher. So if you fail a summer course, you are not eligible for student support since the funds are awarded based on academic performance.

This summer we added an incentive for attending the Praxis Boot Camp and/or passing the Praxis Core tests. If a scholar passes one or more of the Praxis Core tests, the scholar can receive an additional $500 for each test passed. The clincher here is that the total amount cannot exceed $1500. This is not our rule; it's determined by the grant.

I hope this clarifies things for you. I know this money is important to all of you to help cover the cost of your education, rent, and so on.

Please email me at lazure@uttc.edu if you have questions. I am the Project Director for this grant so will do my best to answer your questions specific to funding.

PRAXIS Summer Boot Camp Schedule

Just a reminder that the boot camp for the Math PRAXIS Test is this coming Friday, June 1. We will start at 8:30. Remember to bring your lunch.

Please let me know ASAP if are attending, so Jen and I can coordinate with your Math codes, as you will need to schedule to take your test before you leave on Friday.

Since you will need to pass the Core PRAXIS assessment before you can start taking methods courses, please try to be in attendance. If you can not make it, I am happy to work with you to help with a study plan.

See you soon,
Brenda

Project Sage Noon Meeting

We will be meeting today (Jan. 31) at noon in the Building 61 conference room. This is upstairs from Security, on the second floor. Pizza will be served so you don't have to bring lunch.

The Project Sage grant requires us to bring "scholars" (their term for you, the participants) together on a regular basis. We've scheduled these meeting every month in the past and have found it helps keep us moving forward, as a cohort (group), if we connect to answer questions, provide encouraging words, or just have lunch together.

Attendance will be taken at this noon meeting, as at all of them. Join us to get updates on professional development opportunities (conferences you can attend), your student support payment, info on the dreaded Praxis, and so on.

If you are receiving an email with this message, you are invited to join us. See you at noon!
